Who we are

We are the Mugans. I am Joe, the dad, there is my wife, Tessa, and our kids Ada and Otis. Before setting off on our travels, we lived in Rossendale, Lancashire in the UK. Our kids were born there and we planned out most of our lives thinking we would stay in virtually the same house until they left college (it was right round the corner).

This life seemed like the perfect way “to do it”. But we have always been a little jittery and find it difficult to stay put. Ask our friends, we are always moving.

One day I came across a dream job in Guatemala working for a cacao company I was familiar with. But the fear of leaving the UK was strong. Tessa was so keen for the move and encouraged me to apply. After a couple of conversations, it looked like I had a real chance of getting the job. But as we got more comfortable with the idea of leaving the UK, we became more aware of a growing desire to not settle straight away. Moving to Guatemala meant way more chances to explore the world. So we got to thinking, why not travel full stop?

With a little research we found rough budgets to permanent travel (a lot less than you probably imagine, more on that in the blogs). Suddenly we realised that our future could be doing something that aligned with all of us as a family.

So, I withdrew my application and we started the new plan. The plan for one family, many journeys.
